FOR IMMEDIATERELEASE – January 12, 2023 – McLean, Va. – 3-A Sanitary Standards, Inc. (3-ASSI) today opened applications for its 2024 Dr. Ron Schmidt Student Travel Award. The award helps motivated, career-oriented students attend and participate in the 2024 Summit on Hygienic Design: Advancing Product Safety, Efficiency and Sustainability. The event will be held at the Marriott Chicago O’Hare May 7-9.
The award program honors the late Dr. Ronald H. Schmidt, Professor Emeritus, whose career at the University of Florida Food Science and Human Nutrition Department spanned nearly 40 years. The author of dozens of peer-reviewed papers and author or co-author of 25 books, he was recognized internationally for his expertise in food safety and sanitary design. He was one of the co-founders of 3-A SSI.
“Ron’s passion for encouraging the next generation of food industry professionals to learn about all aspects of hygienic equipment design and food safety is memorialized by this highly competitive award,” says Tim Rugh, executive director of 3-A SSI. “He felt strongly that it is essential to maintain a strong pipeline of new leaders in food safety and dedicated his career to fulfilling that goal.”
The travel award covers airfare, transfers, hotel lodging, and meals at the event, as well as the registration fee. Award recipients are invited to bring a poster or technical paper from their field of interest/research for public display in a designated area outside the meeting rooms.
Students with a demonstrated interest in and commitment to food safety and quality are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be enrolled in a food technology, food science, dairy science, or other closely related program (undergraduate or graduate level) at an accredited college or university in the United States or Canada at the time of the application deadline. The application requires a personal essay and a letter of recommendation from a faculty member or department head. The application deadline is March 22.
